Fall Bridal Trend Prediction #3 from New York Fashion Week 2010

The Mercedez Benz New York Fashion Week closed on February 18th, leaving us with endless possibilities for what may come to the wedding market this Fall. Last week, I shared my second of several predictions as to how this Fall's bridal trends will be affected by New York's runway: skirt gathering. This week, let's take the party higher.

Fall Bridal Trend Prediction #3 - High Necks

Monique L'huillier is seeing something in high necks and we're placing bets that bridal designers will too.  High necklines are a fashion staple in wedding gowns from turn of the century through to the 40s and, given the tremendous popularity in vintage-inspired weddings right now, we wouldn't be surprised to watch the trend move right up the neck.

From bateau (boat) to jewel to high neck, creeping necklines could be all the rage this Fall.  Keep your eyes peeled and see if one of these styles doesn't strike your fancy.

How do you make this trend 'green'?  Explore the world of handcrafted, custom bridal gowns and find this neckline there.  By working with a custom dressmaker local to you, you are ensuring that labor for the gown is not shipped overseas and completed by sweatshop labor...plus, you'll also be supporting your local economy.

Fall Bridal Trend Prediction #2 from New York Fashion Week 2010

The Mercedez Benz New York Fashion Week closed on February 18th, leaving us with endless possibilities for what may come to the wedding market this Fall.  Last week, I revealed my first of several predictions as to how this Fall's bridal trends will be affected by New York's runway:  boning.  This week, the focus is a bit further south.

Fall Bridal Trend Prediction #2 - Gathered Skirts

How do we know which trends are most likely to catch on like wildfire?  When more than one designer is using it!  Here, Monique L'huilier, Diane Von Furstenberg and Vera Wang all utilize bunched layering and gathers in their skirts on the runway.  Fluffy, full and fierce, gathered and layered skirt elements are eye catching and bring dimension to the gown as well as draw the eye downward so as to create the illusion of added length.  (So, if you a shorter torso, this is a quick way to lengthen your overall frame.)  This fall, watch for ballroom gowns covered in fabric flowers and feather-like whisps as well as form-fitting dresses with layered organza, cotton, lace and silk.

How do you make this trend 'green'?  Avoid gowns made with genuine feathers and look for layering crafted of eco fabrics, such as peace silk and organic cotton.

Fall Bridal Trend Prediction #1 from New York Fashion Week 2010

The Mercedez Benz New York Fashion Week closed last Thursday, leaving us with endless possibilities for what may come to the wedding market this Fall.  Over the next few posts, I'll disclose my own predictions as to which bridal fashion trends may appear this coming fall in response to what we saw on the runway in New York last week.

Fall Bridal Trend Prediction #1 - Boning

Zac Posen is exposing it all with waist hugging bodices that accentuate curves and flatter the figure.  This fall, be on the lookout for wedding gowns with visible boning and firm, shaped bodices.

What makes this trend 'green'?   Find a gown with boning that is removable, so that the top can be worn with jeans after the big day instead of sitting wasted in a preservation box.  Add a 2"-3" belt and some everyday chains to make the look even more informal.  Not only is this approach more sustainable, its more practical too!

Give Your Groom an Ego...I Mean...Eco Boost

As much as we ladies like to think the wedding day is all about us, it can't be a one-woman show.  All too often the focus of the big day is only on the bride and what she needs, but your knight in shining army deserves a little love too.  And nothing will give his ego that much-needed lift better than some good ol' fashioned pampering from the woman who won his heart over.

Here are 5 ways to show your groom he's still the center of your attention while also supporting him in going green:

1.  Spoil him with his own eco conscious tuxedo or suit.  The most common way grooms get their attire is by renting them, which means it's not very personal.  Getting your man a tux or suit that is just for him will make him feel extra special and, if the suit is versatile enough, he can even enjoy it after the wedding day.  For more info on eco friendly tuxedos and suits for grooms, check out my article at Eco Beautiful Wedding blog.

2.  Schedule an all-natural men's facial for the groom a month before the wedding, followed by a mini-facial a week prior to the celebration.  Organic and all-natural facials are the best way to remove dead skin, reduce pores, even out skin tones and get his face glowing as you prepare to take some of the best photographs of your life.  If he's on the more masculine (less metro) side, he might be a little hesitant.  Just tell him its your gift to him and will remain your little romantic secret til death do you part.  (Note: Be sure to have the first facial a month before in case he has a reaction to the treatment and needs to recover.  If it's all-natural, this shouldn't happen...but better to be safe than sorry.)

How do you find all-natural facial services?
Search for natural spas using Spa Finder and be sure to add the filter "eco spa" to your search parameters.

3. Plan a private organic or locally grown dinner for just the two of you
2 nights before your wedding. In the hustle and bustle of the final days, he may feel like the last in a long line of priorities for you. This tiny gesture will go a long way to reminding him that he's still the center of your world.

How do you get a locally-grown meal?
        1.  Make a home-cooked dinner using food from your local farmer's market
        2.  Find a locally-supportive restaurant in your area through Local Harvest

4. Book him a massage
a few days before the wedding. This is one of the most effective ways to keep him calm and relaxed leading up to those last few stressful days. He may not appear to be rattled over your big day, but trust me, his nerves are doing a number on him inside.

5.  Give a wedding gift to the groom.
In the south, there is an old tradition in which the bride and groom exchange one luxurious, sentimental gift to each other.  But you don't have to be a Southern Belle to follow suit.  Select a lavish gift that your groom would absolutely love, but might not splurge and buy himself, and present it when you are alone on your wedding day.

P.S.  Don't be disappointed if he doesn't have a gift for you in return.  It's not what you getting, but what your giving that matters.

5 Ways to Make Your DIY Wedding Invitations More Luxurious

If you're a bride who's taking matters into your own hands and braving the waters of do-it-yourself wedding planning, you may be wondering if there's any way to make your at-home projects look sophisticated enough to appear as though they were professionally done...starting with your wedding invitations.  Have no fear sister!  When it comes to your invites, this is SO possible.  It's all about resources and an eye for the glamorous.  And by the end of this post, you'll have both.

When I was a bride, luxury was not an option.  Everything I did had to be classy...it was my wedding and I wouldn't have had it any other way.  And although I had a healthy budget, I couldn't go hog wild on absolutely everything.  Which means that I splurged excessively in some areas and cut corners in others.  Lucky for me, I had some fabulous connections in the print world which made DIY wedding invites a smart choice.  But just because I did them myself doesn't mean they were hokey.  Below are some techniques I used to give my wedding invitations the most upscale look possible while sticking to a shoestring budget.

Each of these tricks were inspired not only by my own wedding, but by the stylish work of INVITESITE.  Invitesite is an eco friendly wedding stationery company that supports brides in pulling off their own DIY wedding invitations in the most environmentally resposible way, with tree-free and post-consumer recycled papers.  The best part?  All of Invitesite's DIY wedding invitation kits come pre-cut with printing templates and instructional videos...do-it-yourself doesn't get any easier than that!

To find DIY pricing on Invitesite's website, just browse any of their invitation styles and click this button:

1.  TEXTURE

Look for stationery that has an interesting texture.  I'm talking about wrinkles, bumps, embossed modern flowers etc.

2.  EMBELLISHMENT

Silky bows, metallic studs, natural fiber ties, organza ribbon...these are the focal points that will turn your wedding invitations from drap to fab.

3.  SHINE

Nothing says red carpet better than shimmer.  A little shine to your invite papers will create a rich look that will help you set the tone for your elegant wedding.

4.  COLOR

Obvious, but a critical factor nonetheless.  Choose one of your primary wedding colors either as the base stationery piece accented by a more neutral embellishment OR vice versa.  Bold is better if you want your invitations to be memorable.

5.  SHAPE

Unusual shapes that are less conventional will pleasantly surprise your guests when they receive your wedding invitation.  By making them think a little, you create an experience that will make your guests feel like they are opening a gift.

Is Handmade Eco-friendly? What To Know About Handmade Wedding Products...

Buying handmade is one of the hottest trends in today's wedding market due to the timely success of handmade superstore, Etsy.  And we think this is certainly a good thing!  After all, Green Diva jewelry is all handmade!  Handmade products are infused with love, creativity and uniqueness.  They also support the livelihood of independent artists and craftspeople, like us.  Yet with all the hype over handmade this and handmade that, you might still be wondering, is it eco-conscious???

And the answer is...it depends.

Photo credit:  Bunky's Pickle at Flickr under Creative Commons

Being eco-friendly and socially-conscious means being mindful throughout the entire supply chain...not just at the stage of final production, where most handcraft goods are created.  That includes the sourcing of raw materials and the preparation of those materials to turn them into usable forms.  It is a very rare thing that any small, independent artist is personally involved in either of those stages of product creation.  Most often, these activities are conducted in developing countries or poorer regions where the greatest human and environmental injustices occur.

The unfortunate reality about most handcraft artists is that they have absolutely no idea where their materials came from and whether or not they were spun, cut, assembled, polished or otherwise treated in a sweatshop with underpaid labor and unhealthy working conditions.  Also, most could not tell you how such raw materials were originally obtained and whether they were gathered in ways that respect land, livestock and watersheds.

The key here is to track the product from raw material onward...from the farm, mine, ranch or forest to the production factory to the artists workshop.  How is this done?  Well, artists need to do their part in tracing the materials they buy back to their origin.  Without knowing where they came from, we just can't be sure whether they were a part of ethical or unethical activities.

Some artists are able to bypass the issue by buying materials second hand at resale shops, goodwill, antique stores and on Ebay.  Typically, this is the most eco-friendly option of all.  Other hand-crafters buy directly from the producers themselves...such as families or indigenous tribes that harvest and transform the materials all by themselves.  Still others choose to purchase from suppliers that are third-party certified for Fair Trade practices.  Fair Trade policies ensure that both people and planet are respected in the process of sourcing new materials.

So if you're looking to make more ethical choices and support people and planet-friendly commerce, then continue to give local handcraft artists your business...but ask them about their supply chain:
-  Where do they source their materials from?
-  How do they know that the labor used to source the materials was treated and paid fairly?
-  Can they be sure that the land and waters were protected in the process of bringing their raw materials to market?

Not only will you be making certain that your precious dollars aren't funding conflict violence, sweatshop labor and worse, but you will also become an inspiration to the artisan community as you encourage them to take an even closer look at their own contributions so they can become greater vehicles of positive change.

An Easy, Low-Cost, Eco Friendly Gift for Bridesmaids - Homemade Organic Lipbaum

Finding the perfect gift for your maids can sometimes be a real challenge.  Weddings get a bad rap for filling closets with leftover trinkets, dresses, accessories and other goodies that will never be used again.  Plus, if you're not careful, much of the overall budget can be squandered on these impractical gifts that are used only once...what a waste.

Instead, consider a more practical, yet funky and totally natural gift that your bridesmaids can use over and over without creating waste or junk piles:  organic lip balm.  (Read more to get ideas for how to make it flashy and fun!)

(Video reposted from Glamology)

Before you start the process of making the lip balm, first consider the container.  Although your bridesmaids will eventually finish off the balm, they will still be left with the container, so you want to make sure its something that they will want to reuse, to avoid any waste.  Here are some ideas on how to 'package' your lip balm in a way that's sustainable, personal and sure to get your Maids excited.

1.   Make it a date and have some DIY good times with your best mates by treating them to a class at your local ceramics craft shop.  You could even plan it as a pre-party warm up to your bachelorette night.  Find a ceramics making boutique near you and find out if they can make jars with lids.  Then schedule a day to bring your bridal party over to the shop, where each one of your girls can design and decorate their own jar to their liking...on you, of course.  At the end of the class, collect their creations and use them as the container to hold your homemade lip balm.

2.  Have field day at your local thrift shop.  I simply LOVE browsing through the kitchenware and dining aisle because you just never know what kind of vintage gems you'll come across.  Keep your eyes open for oriental jars, Victorian jewelry holders and other glass or ceramic knick knacks.  As long as they have a lid, it should do.  Not only will this help you do your part in reducing consumption, it will keep the cost low and give each one of your Maids their own, unique jar.

3.  Try this adorable mini corked jar made of recycled glass.  It's quaint, eco and sure to be reused for other purposes after the lip soothings are gone.

Gowns Made From Milk

As fashion designers become more aware of their environmental footprint, many are getting creative about the types of materials they utilize.  One, in particular, is popularizing a process first introduced by Italian textile designers.  Casey Larkin of Mr. Larkin creates luscious silky gowns using milk that is transformed into a heavy rich fabric by way of steam.

Source:  EcoStiletto

An ethical company, Mr. Larkin follows Fair Trade principles and utilizes organic cotton, silk and cupro (uses the full cotton plant) in its designs.  The collection has been seen on Anne Hathaway and covered in Vogue, Elle, People and Coco Eco.  With apparel ranging from casual to formal, this is a line that high fashion brides should keep on their eco radar.

Save On Your Wedding With New Years Eve Leftovers

New Years celebrations are just a few days away and, whether you're playing host or guest, your end of year bash can become a treasure trove of accessories to help you pull off all those extra wedding day details for next to nothing.  Keep these tips in mind as part of your post-party wrap up to ensure you walk away with some useful loot...while also cutting back on NYE waste.

Photo on Flickr by Ollie Crafoord under Creative Commons license

There's always a handful of goofy NYE party goers that show up in sparkly hats and tiaras, Marti Gras style beads and glow in the dark necklaces.  They likely won't give a hoot about this paraphernalia after the celebration and will be happy to share their bling with you, if you just ask.  These playful extras are the kinds of tidbits that both adults and children love to sport once the dancing kicks in at your reception.  So clean up on these toys after your NYE event and make your wedding party a little funkier.

Empty wine and liquor bottles can be redesigned into wedding centerpieces to hold floral bouquets, branches or candles.  Collect all the large bottles you can, thoroughly clean them and decorate.  You can cover them in dripped candle wax for a romantic effect or get into DIY craft mode and decorate each bottle using fabrics, buttons or other odds and ends that compliment your wedding decor.

Photo on MNN by Lindsay Kurz/Plenty

Wine bottle corks can become place holders for table seating cards and menus.  Clean off used bottle corks and fully dry for several days or even a week.  Take the long side of each cork and slice off the bottom, so as to create a flat surface.  This side will keep the cork from rolling and allow it to lie flat on the table.  On the side that is still rounded, create a slit on the long side, about 1/3 of the way through the thickness of the cork.  Your menu sheet or place card will be inserted upright into this slit.  For full instructions with illustrations, visit MNN's DIY article.

What would New Years Eve be without some good ol' obnoxious noisemakers?  You might think those toys are only good for one night a year, but I beg to differ!  Save all the noisemakers you can find (minus the ones that have a used mouthpiece) and have your ushers hand them out to guests following your wedding ceremony to send you off.  Not only are noisemakers are a far superior alternative to updo-unfriendly rice and wastefully packaged items like bubbles, they are a surefire way to set the tone for the high energy party...I mean, reception...to come.

Reusable Wrapping Paper - A Sustainable Way to Get Wedding Gifts

This time of year produces a lot of trash.  Holiday gift giving often involves garbage bags filled to the brim with crushed packaging and wrapping paper.  Even if some of that wrapping paper was recycled, or re-used from last year, it will still eventually wind up using up energy being recycled again or sitting lifeless in a landfill.  Here's a quick video for how you can use the Japanese art of Furoshiki to turn fabrics into sustainable wrapping paper, as posted by Eco Chic Weddings.

Furoshiki gift wrapping from RecycleNow on Vimeo.

Read more to find out how Furoshiki can help you create a more sustainable wedding.

It isn't just the winter holidays that bring about massive amounts of wrapping paper trash.  It's also wedding showers, bachelorette parties and the wedding day itself.  So we've compiled a short list for how you can encourage guests to contribute to less waste when gifting to your wedding and use Furoshiki to do so.  Post these suggestions to your wedding website or share with friends and family directly when you visit with them in the months leading up to your big day.

1.  Don't wrap the gift

2.  Place the gift in a reusable basket or canvas bag

3.  Wrap the gift in old fabrics, like clean sheets or clothes, and let the bride and groom donate the items to goodwill..or keep them, if they're inclined...after opening the gift

4.  Wrap some of the gifts in other gifts; such as towels, sheets or pillow cases that the bride and groom registered for

How do you wrap gifts in fabrics, such as old clothes, sheets and towels?  Watch this short instructional video on the Japanese art of gift wrapping, called Furoshiki.
